Daxxify and Botox Cosmetic are prescription treatments for temporarily improving moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Daxxify’s studies reported a median of about 24 weeks with lines rated none or mild; Botox Cosmetic’s label describes frown-line effects lasting approximately three to four months. Those figures use different evidence and measures, so they cannot predict your result or establish that one brand is best for you. Daxxify SAKURA trials, Botox Cosmetic prescribing information.

For someone weighing Daxxify vs. Botox, the practical questions are which area you want treated, what the evidence actually measures, your medical history, and the total treatment quote. Calista Aesthetics offers Daxxify and Dysport in Santa Ana’s South Coast Metro and does not carry the Botox brand. This guide explains the comparison so you can bring informed questions to a consultation.

Daxxify and Botox Cosmetic at a glance

Here, “Botox” means Botox Cosmetic, containing onabotulinumtoxinA. The comparison focuses on cosmetic frown-line treatment, also called glabellar-line treatment. Therapeutic uses of the separately labeled BOTOX product involve different indications and treatment plans.

The FDA-approved cosmetic areas differ. Daxxify use for forehead lines or crow’s feet would be off-label under the current label. Ask your provider to identify the proposed area and explain its approval status, evidence, and risks; frown-line study timelines may not apply elsewhere.

How the formulations work

Both products contain botulinum toxin type A. They inhibit acetylcholine release, reducing activity in the injected muscles to temporarily soften the appearance of frown lines. Daxxify mechanism of action, Botox Cosmetic mechanism of action.

Daxxify’s peptide and Botox Cosmetic’s albumin are formulation differences to discuss when reviewing ingredients and previous reactions. Ingredient differences alone cannot tell you which product is safer or more suitable for you. Tell your provider about any reaction to a previous botulinum toxin treatment, even if you are considering another brand.

How long do Daxxify and Botox results last?

In the placebo-controlled SAKURA 1 and 2 trials, Daxxify maintained frown-line severity of none or mild for median durations of 24.0 and 23.9 weeks, using combined investigator and patient assessments at maximum frown. A median describes the middle of the study results. It does not promise six months for every patient or six months without facial movement. Original SAKURA trial report.

Botox Cosmetic’s label describes glabellar effects lasting approximately three to four months. Its pivotal frown-line studies assessed investigator ratings and patient improvement against placebo. Botox Cosmetic label, sections 2.4 and 14.1.

These separate studies differ in their participants, assessments, and definitions of a response. The Daxxify median and Botox label description are useful context. They cannot support a precise claim that one lasts a particular multiple longer.

There is also direct comparative research: a randomized phase 2 study enrolled 268 adults and included both daxibotulinumtoxinA and onabotulinumtoxinA. It reported longer responses in some Daxxify study groups, but it was not powered to establish differences between the active treatments, and its comparisons were not adjusted for multiple testing. It also used a different duration measure from SAKURA. Individual results remain uncertain despite this early evidence. Original phase 2 study.

For your own decision, explain what a useful result means to you and ask when your provider would reassess it. Your follow-up schedule should reflect your response, rather than a promised number of yearly visits.

When do results start?

In SAKURA 1 and 2, Daxxify’s median onset was three days, defined as the first day patients reported at least a one-point improvement in frown-line severity. This measured first improvement, rather than the finished result. SAKURA trial paper.

Botox Cosmetic’s label describes chemical denervation of the treated muscle beginning one to two days after injection and increasing during the first week. That biological description differs from the patient-rated first improvement used in SAKURA, so the numbers cannot identify the faster brand. Botox Cosmetic label, section 2.4.

Mention any upcoming event before choosing a treatment date. Ask when to assess your appearance and how to contact the practice about concerns, rather than relying on a promised day of visible results.

Compare total cost and the proposed treatment plan

A per-unit price cannot compare Daxxify and Botox directly: their potency units cannot be compared or converted between products. A higher numeric unit count does not by itself mean a stronger treatment. Daxxify label, section 2.1, Botox Cosmetic label, section 2.1.

Ask for a total quote covering the named product and proposed areas. Check what follow-up includes and how additional visits would be priced. You can then assess whether that plan fits your budget; study timelines alone cannot predict your yearly spending.

Calista’s current treatment menu and neurotoxin pricing guide explain the pricing questions to bring. Calista’s first-time Dysport offer applies to Dysport only; confirm Daxxify pricing at consultation.

Medical history, side effects, and safety

Both treatments require medical assessment. Neither should be used when there is an infection at the planned injection site or a known allergy to a botulinum toxin product or the selected formulation’s ingredients. Review your medicines, previous injections, neuromuscular conditions, swallowing or breathing problems, and pregnancy or breastfeeding with your provider. Daxxify Medication Guide and contraindications, Botox Cosmetic Medication Guide and contraindications.

Possible adverse effects include eyelid drooping, facial weakness, and symptoms at the injection site. Daxxify’s frown-line label also lists headache. This is not a complete list; separate trials’ side-effect percentages cannot establish which brand is safer. Daxxify label, section 6.1, Botox Cosmetic label, section 6.1 and Medication Guide.

Both carry a boxed warning about toxin effects spreading beyond the injection site. Seek immediate medical help for trouble swallowing, speaking, or breathing after treatment. Symptoms can occur hours to weeks later, and swallowing or breathing complications can be life-threatening. Daxxify boxed warning, Botox Cosmetic boxed warning.

Choosing a treatment at Calista

You can arrive with questions rather than a brand decision. Useful questions include:

  • Which product and areas are you recommending, and why?
  • How does my previous treatment response affect the recommendation?
  • Which proposed uses are FDA-approved, and which are off-label?
  • When should we review the result, and whom should I contact with concerns?
  • What is the total quote, and what does follow-up include?

Calista’s available neurotoxins are Daxxify and Dysport. If you want to compare those options, read our Daxxify vs. Dysport guide. Our Botox vs. Dysport article addresses the other pairing.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Daxxify better than Botox?

There is no automatic winner for every person. The early direct trial has important design limits, while the larger SAKURA trials compared Daxxify with placebo. Discuss your goals, medical history, previous response, and the proposed plan with your provider. Phase 2 study, SAKURA studies.

Does Daxxify always last six months?

No. The approximately 24-week durations were medians in the SAKURA studies. Some participants had shorter responses and others longer ones, so your duration may differ. SAKURA studies.

Can I switch from Botox to Daxxify?

Discuss a switch with your provider and bring the product name, date of your last treatment, and details of any reactions. Both Medication Guides ask about botulinum toxin treatment within the previous four months. That disclosure question does not set a personal switching interval. Daxxify Medication Guide, Botox Cosmetic Medication Guide.

Is Daxxify more expensive than Botox?

A meaningful comparison requires total quotes for each proposed plan. Unit prices alone do not compare the products, and longer duration in a study does not guarantee lower yearly spending. Calista does not carry Botox; confirm a Daxxify quote at consultation.
